Are You Suited to Be Your Own Boss

by Trina Newby

Take the Personal Inventory Questionnaire Below:

Determine if the business owner's lifestyle is really for you.  If you are a very organized person who likes a strict routine, lots of people around, directions from others and supervision - starting a business might not be for you.

On the other hand, if you like working independently and seem to get more done when you have control and have no problem delegating and motivating others, then you are more likely to be your own boss.

The following personal inventory questionnaire will assist you in evaluating your true feelings about starting a business.

  • Do you have the organization skills and determination to manage and operate a business even when it is not making money?
  • Are you highly self-motivated?
  • Are you a self-starter?
  • Do you set high goals for yourself, or do you function best when others are directing you?
  • Do you need structure constantly or do you prefer to have a flexible and free lifestyle?
  • Are you a procrastinator or do you set your goals and accomplish them within the timeframe that you set?
  • Do you hate being alone?
  • Do you seem to like being around excitement, hustle and bustle type environments?
  • Are you willing to make changes even when you don't want to?
  • Evaluating yourself can be extremely difficult.  However, it is necessary prior to making a decision to start a business.  If you have trouble answering some of the questions, talk with a close friend or mentor who would be objective.  Ask them how they would answer the above questions.  You might see yourself as a "go getter", but someone else might see you backing out on projects, because of the "fear-factor".

Starting a business will be easier if you know the type of temperament, knowledge and skills you must have in order to achieve success.  A successful business owner must be organized, motivated, self-disciplined, sacrificing, independent, goal-oriented, flexible and most of all willing to make a change for the better.
