Social Networking on the Internet

by Trina Newby

social_networking_teleclass_logoThere’s a new word on the web that is growing in popularity - It’s called “Social Networking” and Social Networks are popping up all over the Internet.   What are Social Networks?  Social Networks are websites designed specifically to connect like-minded groups of people or individuals in an interactive manner through one-on-one connections.  The power behind this new way of communicating on the Internet is that you can create your own presence by starting a niche group, your own blog and your own personal profile with links back to your own site.  In addition you can invite anyone to become your friend or associate and connect with them frequently, thus the art of social networking.  There’s a huge opportunity to connect with other small business owners throughout the world.

However, unlike general in-person networking where you exchange business cards and perhaps connect with your contact at another time, social networking requires more work.  Below, find 10 ways to introduce yourself to this new way of communicating online:

  1. <!--[if !supportLists]-->Visit several social networking sites for businesses before you decide which one is best for you.  Simple “Google” social networks for business and you’ll find a host of them.  Take time to explore them.
  2. <!--[if !supportLists]--> <!--[endif]-->Learn the proper etiquette to social network.  Simply inviting someone to join your personal network isn’t enough.  Nor is joining a group.  Social networking requires you to give back by sharing your expertise and contribute useful information.  If you approach it from a sales standpoint you won’t get any responses.  Just people viewing your offer.
  3. <!--[if !supportLists]--> <!--[endif]-->If you’re joining a social network to educate others about your business and industry, make sure you use your business name as your user name or an abbreviated version or subject of your business.  This helps when people are searching for your type of service on the search engines, such as Google, Yahoo, MSN etc.
  4. <!--[if !supportLists]--> <!--[endif]-->Most successful social networkers contribute and participate in their networks at least 2-3 times weekly.  This is where you have to be careful because joining too many social networks can become consuming and overwhelming leaving no time to conduct your business.
  5. <!--[if !supportLists]--> <!--[endif]-->If Social Networking seems to be converting sales for you consider hiring a Virtual Assistant to help you with posting online and keeping your participation level high.
  6. <!--[if !supportLists]--> <!--[endif]-->Make it a goal to write at least 2 short tips paragraphs weekly with a resource or two include.  Keep in a document folder just for contributing to social networks.
  7. <!--[if !supportLists]--> <!--[endif]-->Don’t feel that you have to accept everyone’s invitation to be their friend or associate.  Really ask them why they are interested in connecting with you.
  8. <!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->Use your personal profile to share what you do in business and the benefits of using your service and/or products.  On some networks you can even offer coupons and discounts or upload banners and your own links on your personal page.
  9. <!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->Schedule time to get on the social networks you have joined and be strict with it.  If not, you can find yourself surfing for hours.
  10. <!--[if !supportLists]--><!--[endif]-->Stays focused and refrain from making personal comments on business social networks.  Always contribute business information or share tips and resources related to your industry.
